Reflecting on 2017

So 2018 is almost here and I wanted to take a moment to reflect on this past year. 2017 has been by far the craziest year I have ever had. It had a lot of ups and downs and was probably the biggest roller coaster of a year I have ever had. Below are the biggest obstacles/circumstances that happened in 2017 and what I learned from each of them. I will go ahead and warn you, I get very REAL in this blog post. I think it's important to be real and to really share your heart so here goes nothing...

1) I started my blog. In February of 2017, Mumu and Macaroons officially started. It had always been a dream of mine for years to start a fashion blog and I finally made the plunge. I am so, so glad that I did. I honestly started it having no idea where it would take me. I thought it would probably be a hobby for me and something that I could do to give myself a creative outlet. Little did I know, it grew way faster than I ever imagined that it would and I was finally able to have it be my career. I took the scary risk of quitting my corporate job to pursue this dream of mine and I have so much gratitude to all of you for helping to make my passion come true. I love each and every one of you more than you will ever know.

2) I had a falling out with a friend. This situation was a ROUGH one for me. I won't go into crazy details but unfortunately I had a big falling out with someone who at one time I considered one of my best friends. This was a very traumatic experience for me as I have never had a falling out like this with a friend before. Of course, I have gotten into fights with my friends before but never anything to this degree. When I decided to part ways with this person, it was cold turkey and I haven't spoken to them a day since. It's been over 6 months. Although I feel like I made the right decision, the wealth of emotions that followed this decision was intense. I had feelings of regret, feelings of hopelessness, feelings of sadness, feelings of peace, feelings of uneasiness, feelings of happiness, feelings of anger-I mean you name the emotion, I felt it. And the feelings went up and down. One day I would feel great about everything and then the next I would be sad again. I wondered if the cycle would ever end. Thanks to time, therapy, and the most amazing family and friends a girl could ask for, I can finally say that I am at peace with the situation. I have realized that I cannot control every single situation and that sometimes I just have to let it go even when my heart sometimes has emotions of it's own. I have learned that everything happens for a reason and that I have to trust in God's plan. I have learned who my true friends are. More importantly, I have learned to forgive and let go of this terrible situation. I do and will always love this person and want nothing but the best for them. When I decided to forgive myself and everyone involved in what produced the downfall of this friendship, I was really set free. I no longer hold onto the hate and the bitterness. I have truly realized that life is way TOO SHORT to hold grudges and to hang onto hate. We are not guaranteed a tomorrow and although this friendship didn't turn out to be tried and true, it would still kill me if anything happened to this person. For many different reasons including peace for myself, I have decided to let go of the anger and focus on the positive things going on in my life and to be thankful for the good times that were had.

3) My parents went through a divorce. This was by far the hardest part of 2017. My dad has battled a drug addiction for most of my life so honestly when my mom called me and told me the news it wasn't that big of a shock to me. We wanted my dad to get help every single day and we even sent him to rehabs to get help a few times and every single time he would come back and not finish the program and we would be right back to where we started. In the back of my mind, I always knew that my mom deserved better and I felt so bad for what she had to endure every single day. The lies, the stealing, the abuse (physical and mental) that comes with being involved with someone who has a drug addiction is something that no person should have to go through. Not to mention, everything that I have witnessed growing up has scarred me for life and is something that I will have to live with and learn how to deal with for the rest of my life. When my mom made the call to tell me about the divorce I was happy but very sad at the same time. No one ever wants to hear that their parents are getting a divorce. But things had gotten so bad that I was glad my mom was going to have a second chance at happiness and at life. We tried so hard to get my dad to realize that he had a problem and he just wouldn't do it. Everyone knows that the first step to overcoming a problem is to admit that you have a problem and if someone won't admit they have a problem after 15+ years then there is really nothing else you can do. My parents divorce is officially finalized. I haven't spoken to my dad in over a year which has been the hardest thing about this entire season of my life. He has been in and out of jail a few different times which was really hard to swallow. Until he can admit he has a problem then I just really feel like there is no need to talk. It doesn't mean that it is easy for me. I wanted to call him on his birthday so bad, I wanted to call him on Christmas and wish him a Merry Christmas, there have been a lot of things that I have wanted to do but I have had to stay strong. I worry everyday if I will get the call that something horrible has happened to him. I have had to learn to give this situation completely over to God and to pray that my dad will one day realize what has happened, be able to admit that he has a problem, get the help that he needs, and can be a better man. I hope this so that one day we can have the kind of relationship that we both deserve to have.

So as you all can see, 2017 was full of many BIG ups and downs. The best by far being me starting my blogging journey and the worst being broken relationships. I am thankful for all of the hard times because it is the hard times in life that truly do make us stronger and mold us into the people that we are supposed to be. God is so good and He always comes through. I always try to keep good faith and pray that He will help mend my relationship with my dad. As we head into 2018, here are some resolutions that I hope to achieve and put into action

1) Stop sweating the small stuff and be more positive/see the good in every situation.
2) Surround myself only around people who support me, lift me up, and make me want to be a better person.
3) Be more forgiving and understanding of other people and their situations.
4) Be a better friend, wife, daughter, and person in general.
5) Work on taking my blog to new levels by pursuing new opportunities and always looking to improve in areas that may need some improvement.
6) While working on my blog, also make sure I give myself time to "unplug". In 2018, I really need to work on making more time for family and friends and to learn when to put the phone and computer down and rest and be present. This is something that I did not do a very good job at in 2017 that I really want to improve on in the new year.
7) Continue to work out but also make healthier changes. I really want to work on eating healthier in 2018 and holding myself to even higher standards at the gym. I will still continue to do Kayla Itsine's BBG program but I also want to incorporate some other workouts into my weekly workout routine. Eating healthy has always been hard for me as I love good food, my husband and I love going out to eat for dinner, and I have a big sweet tooth. In 2018 I am going to make it a priority to learn more about healthy eating and to find ways to easily incorporate it into my daily routine.
8) Save more money. This is always big on my list every year and I have gotten A LOT better about spending money but this year my husband and I want to buy a house so saving money in any way that I can is really important this year.
9) Get more organized. I need to work on better organizing my blogging work, especially my emails. Right now I don't really have a good system going on and my emails are out of control. I really plan on focusing on getting organized in 2018 and finding a good system that works for me so that I do not miss out on good opportunities from simply "missing an email" or not getting to it in enough time.
10) Work on my faith. Faith has always been a huge part of my life but there is a lot of improvement I can do. My husband and I go to church when we can but we don't go as much as we should. Going to church has always been very important in my life and in 2018 I want to make sure that I make it a priority to go every single week. I also want to make it a priority to start out every single day by reading my devotional and praying. Having a stronger relationship with God is my number 1 priority in the new year.

2017 has been bittersweet and I cannot wait to see what all 2018 brings. 2018 brings a year of new opportunities, new outlooks, new friendships, new adventures, and new lessons. I have never been more ready to take on a new year than this year. I am ready to better myself as a person and to have a better outlook on life. I can't wait to see what 2018 brings and what God does in mine and my husband's life. 2018, here we come!!!!

Nordstrom Half Year Sale Picks

I hope that you all had the most AMAZING Christmas. I can't believe that it is already over. Christmas being over is always the saddest thing, isn't it? There is so much hype around the Holidays so when it's over it kind of leaves you feeling like "what now?" and then you immediately go back to reality. I wish the Holidays could truly last all year long!

I heard about the saddest news on Christmas Eve. I won't go into details because it is not my business to tell but someone that I knew from my past and other people died in a small plane crash on Christmas Eve day. When I heard this news it kind of rocked my world. The amount of sadness that came over me was excruciating. I couldn't believe that something like this could happen and I felt so, so sorry for all their family and friends. This news made me really think about some things. It made me realize that life truly is SO SHORT and you never know when your last day on this earth will be. Really think about that. We never know when our next breathe will be or what could happen tomorrow or better yet even 5 minutes from now. This really made me want to hold onto my loved ones tighter. This made me want to be a better wife, a better friend, a better daughter, a better person. Life is too short to sweat the small things. We are lucky for every single second that we are given and we cannot take that for granted. I refuse to take life for granted any longer. I know that is easier said than done but this terrible tragedy that happened on Christmas Eve is just proof that life should be lived to the fullest every single day and no grudge should ever be held against anyone. I hope if anything that this story can make you love the people in your life more than you already do and help you realize what really is important in life.

Okay, onto some better news- Nordstrom is having their annual half year sale!! This sale is HUGE. There are ton of great mark downs on Fall/Winter clothes, shoes, accessories, handbags, etc. I went ahead and rounded up my favorite picks from the women's clothing and shoe section. Rachel Allan Sequin Dress

New Year's Eve is almost here and who is looking for that perfect sequin dress for their party plans?? This is the first year that I actually don't have fancy New Year's Eve plans because we will be in the mountains with our friends BUT every single year before this one I have always been on the hunt for the perfect dress to wear to whatever party we are going to.

This silver sequin dress from Rachel Allan is absolutely perfect. If silver isn't your favorite this dress also comes in black and you can never go wrong with wearing black to any fancy event. Let me tell you all of the reasons that I love this sequin dress:

1) I love the high cut of the front. It makes it so elegant and classy, making it perfect for any event.
2) I love the bell sleeves. The sleeves are too perfect on this dress. I don't know how many sequin dresses that I have seen with bell sleeves and I love that it sets this dress apart.
3) Of course I love the LOW back!!!! The low back on this dress is by far the best part. It is STUNNING. You are sure to turn heads in this dress with this low back. I love how the low cut of the back takes the otherwise very classy and elegant dress and makes it also very sexy. You can't get a better combination than that.

For accessories I just decided to pair this dress with a pair of metallic heels and metallic statement earrings. By the way, these metallic heels are my absolute favorite. I actually have this exact shoe in about 5 different colors. That is how much I love them. I think the block heel makes them so trendy and the heel is actually very comfortable. They have never caused my feet to have blisters.

I hope you all love this beautiful sequin dress as much as I do. For sizing reference, I am wearing a size 2. I am a normal size 2 so I would suggest ordering the size that you normally wear. If you have any special event to go to throughout the year, I highly suggest visiting Rachel Allan to find a dress to wear. They have SO many amazing options ranging from short dresses, long dresses, cocktail dresses, black tie dresses, sequin dresses, velvet dresses, two piece dresses-you name it, they have it.

Thank you to Rachel Allan for sponsoring this post. As always, the opinions are of my own.

XOXO,
Katy

Red Leather Skirt

I hope that everyone had a great weekend! My husband and I went to his annual work Christmas party on Friday night and we had the absolute best time. It was the first time we have really been out in Charlotte in a while so it was a lot of fun. Can y'all believe that Christmas is only 8 days away?? I am so excited. We are going to Raleigh to be with my husband's family Thursday-Saturday then coming back to Charlotte to host Christmas with my family which I am really looking forward to. I absolutely love hosting and having people over at our house. Something about it just makes me so happy.

If any of you are looking for a last minute Christmas outfit, I think that this look is so cute and perfect for any event. It is perfect for any Christmas party or just simply wearing on Christmas day. I am absolutely in LOVE with this red leather skirt. I mean, how cute is it?? It also comes in black and I love how it is high waisted and has the cutest bow in the front. I originally bought a sweater to wear with this skirt but ended up liking the look of this simple turtleneck with it more. The skirt already makes a bold enough statement that I think you can easily wear it with a very simple top. I decided to pair this look with my favorite leopard print pumps and I think they go with the outfit perfectly. What do you guys think? I can't get enough leopard lately! For sizing reference, I am wearing a 0 in the skirt. I think it runs a little big so if you are in between sizes then I would definitely size down one size.

A couple of weeks ago I was watching a Joel Osteen sermon on TV and the message really hit home with me and I just had to share it with you guys. I think it is a message that we could all relate and learn from. The title of the Sermon is "Run Your Own Race" and Joel spoke about how it can be so tempting to go throughout life competing with everyone. From being a blogger, I see this happen to people all the time and I sometimes find myself doing it as well. It is so easy to look at everyone else, see how successful they are, and turn around and compare yourself. This type of mental behavior only leaves us feeling inferior every single time. I have seen it ruin relationships time and time again, even in my own life.

In the sermon Joel says that when we see someone who is more talented, better looking, or has more gifts, instead of running our race and being comfortable with who we are, a lot of the times we feel inferior and think "I've got to catch up with them". He tells us that the problem with this unhealthy competition is that it's a never ending cycle. There will always be someone ahead of us in life. He states that it is very freeing when you realize "I'm not competing with you. I understand that I am not in competition with my friend, my neighbor, or my co-worker. Instead, I am going to focus on being the best person that I can be."

I think the overall takeaway from this message is that when you focus on who God has made you to be, that is when you will rise up higher, be happier in life, and position yourself for every single blessing and gift that God has for you and your life. God gives different gifts to different people for different reasons. He allows things to happen in different people's lives at different times. We may never understand these reasons but we have to trust that God's timing and purpose is always perfect. It is so easy to fall into the trap of comparison but it is only going to steal your joy. Instead, be happy for others, realize and be thankful for the gifts that God has given you, and praise other people's successes just like people would do for you. If you were touched by this message at all and have time, I urgeeee you to please listen to the full sermon at the link here. It is one of my all time favorite sermons to date and I know that God will touch your heart with this one.

XOXO,
Katy

Velvet Bam Bam Bells

All Photos By: Jim Trice Photography

I hope all of you have had an amazing week! This week has absolutely flown by and I can't believe that Christmas is less than a week away. Whoa, where does the time go?? I wanted to share this outfit with y'all that is so perfect for the Holidays. It is such a fun Holiday look and so different than what you normally see which is why I absolutely LOVE it.

Can we talk about these flared pants?? These are Show Me Your Mumu's famous bam bam bells and let me tell you, they are everything. Not only are they so flattering but they are SO comfy. It feels like you are wearing pajamas! They are also super highwaisted which I love. The ones that I am wearing here are a gold velvet material which makes it so perfect for a Holiday party. I honestly think this look would be stunning for an NYE party. Rather than going for a typical dress, it would be so much fun to switch it up with this kind of look. These particular Bam Bam bells sold out super fast but I found some similar options for you here and here. They are the exact same pants but just a different material. One is solid black velvet and the other is silver. Both still perfect for a Holiday party. If you are a huge fan of this velvet gold material I also found it in an amazing jumpsuit here. I am equally obsessed with it!! You all know I love a good jumpsuit.

I decided to pair these bell bottoms with this fun one shoulder blouse. I think they look so cute paired together. I just simply tucked the blouse in to give it more of that bodysuit type of look. If you are't big into tucking your tops, I also think that this keyhole black top would look amazing paired with these pants. You truly can't go wrong with either one. Just for reference, I am wearing a size Small in the pants and the top!

Does anyone have any fun NYE plans? My husband and I are actually going to Asheville for a few days with our best friends and I cannot wait. I haven't spent New Year's Eve in the mountains yet but I have always wanted to. We rented a big mountain house and I am so excited to not have to deal with all of the crazy crowds and packed out bars. It will be so nice getting to spend some QT time with our favorite people.

I was watching a sermon the other morning and the pastor, Joel Osteen, shared a message that really hit home with me. One of the quotes from his message is "Don't get distracted, run your race." I am going to be writing an entire blog post about this next week so stay tuned. It is such a good message so I encourage you all to read!

XOXO,
Katy
